Residents and visitors in Kington face months without access to the town’s primary public conveniences while repairs are carried out on historic council-owned buildings.

Herefordshire Council has begun essential maintenance on the town’s Market Hall and the adjacent Coach House, which houses the public facilities.

Former town councillor and local resident Wendy Watts expressed frustration over the closure, noting the repairs are scheduled to last between ten and twelve weeks. She highlighted the impact on visitors and individuals with specific health or mobility needs, pointing out that alternative facilities were not immediately available.

In response to local concerns, Kington Mayor Councillor Martin Woolford confirmed the town council has arranged for the toilets at the local recreation ground to remain open in the interim.

A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council stated that the temporary closure was anticipated and that community partners were notified prior to the start of the project.

Members of the public were initially directed to facilities at Kington Library. The council confirmed that temporary toilets, including an accessible unit and a standard cubicle, are being installed in the Crabtree Road car park for the duration of the works.

The local authority acknowledged the disruption, thanking residents, local businesses, and visitors for their patience while work is completed to preserve the historic community building.

The renovation project is scheduled for completion in mid-November.
