Heartless thieves steal charity donation box from fish and chip shop: Three burglars broke into Oceans on St Owen Street, stealing a charity donation box and a phone charger. The stolen tin was full of donations for St Michael's charity. The owner, Mal Williams, has changed the locks and is back serving customers. Church Commissioners of England lands approval for 350-home Herefordshire scheme : A proposed development of 350 homes on land owned by The Church Commissioners of England, representing the first phase of a 1,000-home community, has been approved by the Herefordshire Council's Planning Committee. The scheme includes a care home, a park and choose facility, and an open and play space. The site is bordered by Roman Road, Three Elms Road, and Yazor Brook. This is part of the Church Commissioners' wider strategic land portfolio, which has capacity for about 30,000 homes across England.

Inquest opened into death of man killed in bin lorry crash: The inquest into the death of Andzie Richard Stanik, 62, was opened by the Herefordshire coroner on November 19. Stanik was killed when a bin lorry crashed into a former pub on the A44 Mill Street and Bridge Street roundabout. Two other passengers, the lorry driver and a second passenger, were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The crash caused significant structural damage to the former Golden Lion pub, which was demolished for safety reasons.

Man ordered to undergo alcohol treatment after double assault: A man, Jamie Bryan, has been ordered to undergo alcohol treatment after assaulting two people in a Herefordshire town. He pleaded guilty to multiple counts of common assault, including using threatening, abusive words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. He was also ordered to pay compensation of £50 to each victim and a £115 victim surcharge.

Ludlow Distillery teams up with cathedral as new spirits launched: Ludlow Distillery is partnering with Hereford Cathedral to create two new spirits, Cloister Garden Gin and Herefordshire Royal Cider Cask - First Release Single Malt. The distillery founder, Shaun Ward, has lived most of his adult life in the precinct of Hereford cathedral and was inspired by the botanical history of the gardens. The new spirits are available for purchase in the Cathedral Shop and are believed to be the first English cathedral whisky created in partnership with an English distillery.

Plans for more buses from market towns 'unworkable': Herefordshire Council's Cabinet is set to approve a Transport Plan aimed at greatly expanding bus use in the county within a decade and a half. This includes half-hourly services between Hereford and Leominster, and between hereford and Ross-on-Wye. However, Derek Cochrane, compliance manager at Forest Coaches and former bus driver, said that infrastructure for buses is inadequate and drivers are choosing the less stressful option of lorry driving. The plan also includes improved access at Ledbury’s railway station, one of only four in the country.

Speed limit slashed at A-road crash blackspot: A temporary speed restriction has been introduced on the A465 at the Locks Garage crossroads in response to community concerns about safety. The council has reduced the national speed limit from 60mph to 40mph for an 18-month trial period. The change will be monitored to determine whether this action improves highway safety or whether further measures are needed. The area has been described as one of the most prolific road traffic collision sites on the county road network in recent years.

The 25-hectare site is located just 1.8 miles from Hereford city centre and aims to provide a sustainable extension to the city and surrounding neighbourhoods, including 96 affordable homes and land for a new care home. The Church Commissioners worked closely with Herefordshire Council and consultees to ensure the scheme's sustainability, supported by robust technical assessments. The masterplan is part of the Commissioners' wider 2025 approvals for nearly 5,000 homes across England.

The event also coincided with the city's Christmas lights switch-on event. The festivities will continue in December, with an event at the Hereford Motor Group’s showroom.

Woman who stole tools worth thousands to pay just £500 compensation: A woman, Christine Kaye, has been ordered to pay £500 in compensation for stealing tools worth thousands of pounds. The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of theft and was handed a £500 stand-alone compensation order due to her lack of financial resources and the stress of court proceedings. The tools stolen from another person were worth between £4,000 and £5,000. No charges were paid for prosecution costs or a victim surcharge.

Popular city riverside walk reopens after floods: The walkway was reopened following floods on November 14, causing frustration as the area was declared safe. The circular riverside walk from the city visits the cathedral and the castle site before following a path into the surrounding countryside. The walk is only around 700 metres long and is popular with dog walkers and joggers. The Environment Agency has removed any flood alerts for now, but warns of standing water and some debris.

Fate of 350-home scheme for edge of Hereford is decided: The Church Commissioners' proposal to build on 25 hectares of farmland in Hereford has been subject to numerous revisions since its initial proposal in 2022. The issue of road access to the site was also raised due to concerns over flooding. However, case officer Heather Carlisle stated that highway officers no longer objected to the application following revisions to the planned road access. She also stated that Heineken, the owner of the nearby Bulmers cider plant, had withdrawn its objection over potential impact on its water supply. The Church Commissioners have agreed to a £2-million contribution to local infrastructure, including a “park and choose” at the site and active travel measures along Grandstand Road. Despite several objections, the committee voted to pass the scheme.

Pete Trigg has been a member of Hereford Hospital Radio for over 10 years. Pete is a natural broadcaster and his warmth and local knowledge really inspires many to look up to him at Hospital Radio.
Pete for a number of years has acted as mentor to many of our new members who have gone on to develop their own careers, and his ability to make radio easy is something of an art.
Being patient, and generous with his time, both at the studio, and on the wards, Pete make a presenter feel at ease.
'Pete and his wife have given up huge amounts of time over many years to support HHR, the patients and the community ' wrote the person who nominated him. " In early years the presenters would go around the wards before their shows and collects requests. At weekend they would help with fund raising."
